The city is planning improvements to the park and wants community input to help guide the future design.The project will focus on updating aging park features and improving existing amenities, including the playground. Because General’s Park includes historic landmarks, any proposed changes will be carefully considered to preserve the site’s history and character.
At the center of the park is the historic Waterfowl Preserve, a one-acre pond built around 1900 as part of the Gutheil Gardens Nursery, which existed before Fitzsimons Army Medical Center. The pond is stocked with trout, and the birds are protected under federal permit No. 29756.
The Waterfowl Preserve and nearby Mission Revival-style guardhouses, built in 1919 as the entrance to Fitzsimons General Hospital, became Aurora Local Historic Landmarks in 1999. The guardhouses were restored in 2010, including hand-sculpted eagle medallions that replicate the original military hospital symbols. Together, these features reflect Aurora’s natural and cultural history across generations.
Today, the park supports history and nature education through guided History Hikes and other museum programs. Visitors can walk around the pond and read interpretive signs about the site’s history. Amenities include a reservable shelter, restrooms and a playground scheduled for renovation in 2027.

Freedom Park is a quarter-acre pocket park at 13697 E. 13th Ave. It is the smallest pocket park in Aurora. The city is planning improvements to the park, and residents will have several opportunities to provide feedback, including two ward-wide meetings, a pop-up event and a public presentation of the proposed design.The previous playground was removed after it reached the end of its useful life and posed safety risks. Today, the park serves as a neighborhood gathering space with a picnic table and shade structure.
The park's small size and existing features, including the narrow sidewalk that separates it from Potomac Street, will help shape the design and determine which amenities can be added.

is one of three existing parks planned for renovation in Ward 1 during the 2027 budget year. The city will improve the park's southeast corner with ADA upgrades and a new playground. Residents will have several opportunities to provide feedback, including two ward-wide meetings, a pop-up event at Havana Park and a public presentation of the proposed design. Parks, Recreation and Open Space, Public Works and Aurora Water will work together on the project.Havana Park first appeared on the city's 1960 Proposed Parks and Recreation map during the rapid growth that followed World War II. In 1958, Jamaica Primary School opened one block away, serving students in kindergarten through third grade. Aerial photos from 1963 show the school still had no playground five years after it opened. Havana Park helped meet that need by giving nearby families a place to play within walking distance of home. Together, the park, school, transportation improvements and other public infrastructure show how Aurora planned growing neighborhoods around community needs.
Today, Havana Park sits just east of the 2023 Havana Street Study Area, an important commercial, transportation and cultural corridor in north Aurora. Improvements at the park support the study's goals of safer connections, better neighborhood access and more quality green space.
In 2025, the Del Mar Triangle Improvements added a new drainage structure, an ADA-accessible curb ramp and a traffic signal at the park's northwest corner to improve pedestrian safety. About 75% of the park also serves as stormwater infrastructure, showing how parks can provide both recreation and environmental benefits.
