What does multimodal mean?

Multimodal is a transportation term that means all the different ways people travel from one place to another. This could be your vehicle, a bus or train, your feet, or something with wheels like a bicycle, scooter, skateboard, hoverboard or wheelchair. You name it. We want to make sure this plan considers all types of transportation modes.

What is the purpose of this plan?

The purpose of Connecting Aurora is to examine the city's transportation needs holistically and develop a multimodal transportation master plan that is forward based and innovative in value to create a complete transportation system for people of all backgrounds, ages, and abilities.

How will the plan impact the future of transportation in Aurora?

The plan will identify projects, policies, and programs for all modes of transportation, including bike, pedestrian, transit, freight and vehicular traffic consistent with the city's overall development vision expressed in the adopted comprehensive plan, Aurora Places.

Connecting Aurora will guide the development, design, and delivery of future multimodal transportation infrastructure projects and programs that focus on providing safer, more sustainable and convenient mobility options for the community.

What is the process for developing Connecting Aurora?

Connecting Aurora is being developed over the next two years, with a final draft to be presented at the end of 2025. Throughout the process, the project team will work closely with the community to make sure that the community has adequate opportunities to engage and provide input, and the project recommendations and outcomes reflect the needs of our community. View a timeline of the planning process in the key project milestones section of this webpage.

How does this plan differ from other plans that have been developed in recent years?

This plan differs from other plans in the following areas:

    • It is Aurora’s first ever citywide multimodal transportation master plan and will examine the city's transportation needs holistically, as well as the different travel and land use characteristics within and between parts of the city.
    • This project will be innovative with a focus on creating a complete transportation network and supporting programs and projects that address travel needs for Aurora residents of all incomes and ability.
    • Connecting Aurora will build upon the city’s commitment to inclusive public engagement by reaching out to the public early and often across all Aurora neighborhoods and business centers, especially those who have historically not been heard from, allowing diverse audiences to provide meaningful feedback from start to finish. Our promise is to bring the community along in the process and use input received to make positive change to our transportation system and prioritize projects that matter to the community.

How does this plan differ from other transportation plans developed in recent years?

Previous transportation plans have focused on specific areas of the city individually. This is the city's first-ever citywide multimodal transportation master plan. Connecting Aurora will examine the city's transportation needs holistically, along with the city's various travel and land-use characteristics.

The plan also will be innovative, with a focus on creating a complete transportation network and supporting programs and projects that address travel needs for Aurora residents, employees and visitors of all incomes and abilities. It will serve as a unified mechanism to guide the development, design and delivery of future multimodal transportation infrastructure projects and programs.

How will the public's feedback impact the plan?

The plan will build upon the public engagement efforts of previous transportation projects in recent years and the city's commitment to inclusive public engagement. The plan will reflect meaningful feedback from diverse communities throughout the city's neighborhoods and business centers, especially those who are historically underrepresented. Our promise to the public is to make sure the plan reflects the community's priorities and illustrates how public input influenced the plan's outcomes.
