Powhaton Road Construction Update – July 24,2025
We want to share an update on the steps being taken to address traffic concerns in Adonea and nearby neighborhoods due to the ongoing closure of Powhaton Road for water main installation work.
We recognize that the original traffic control plan, as previously communicated to you, was not fully implemented on the first day of the closure. While the plan called for Powhaton Road to be closed from East 6th Avenue to East Alameda Avenue, it was initially closed only from East 6th Avenue to East 1st Avenue. As of today, the full closure through to Alameda Avenue is now in place, as originally intended.
To further address community concerns—particularly related to increased traffic, speeding, and large truck volumes on North New Castle Way—we’re putting additional measures in place to help ease the impact:
Starting Thursday, July 24, flaggers will be stationed at both 6th Avenue and Alameda Avenue at North New Castle Way. These flaggers will stop and redirect large trucks and commercial vehicles attempting to use North New Castle Way, guiding them toward the approved detour route. Local delivery and trash service vehicles will still be allowed access.
Manned contract patrol vehicles will be stationed on both ends of New Castle Way to increase driver awareness of posted speed limits.
A radar speed sign has been installed near 6th Avenue to promote safer driving behavior.
We will continue to monitor traffic patterns and the effectiveness of these new measures as the project progresses.
We truly appreciate your patience and understanding during this time and apologize for the inconvenience and safety concerns caused by the road closures. Your feedback remains important, and we welcome continued input at cpd_info@auroragov.orgor 720-859-4312.
Project Description
Aurora Water is installing a new 30-inch water main along Powhaton Road between Sixth and First avenues. As part of this process, Powhaton will need to be closed between Sixth and Alameda avenues, with multiple detours in the area.
Project details, including timelines, detours, and frequently asked questions are in the documents to the right.
