FAQs
What is the purpose of the project?
The purpose of this project is to develop the preliminary and final design plans and construction documents needed to guide the eventual construction of improvements in the Gartrell Road and E-470 interchange once funding is secured for this South Aurora Regional Improvement Authority project.
What improvements are planned?
Design plans are still in the early stages of development, but some of the planned improvements include widening the existing Gartrell Road bridge to accommodate more travel lanes, adding traffic signals to facilitate turning movements, improving the ramps to align with the widened bridge structure and signalized intersections, and adding bicycle/pedestrian paths on both sides of the bridge.
What is the design schedule?
Work began in early 2022 to collect data related to traffic volumes, the bridge structure and existing right-of-way to use in developing the design plans. Muller Engineering is now working with the city of Aurora to finalize the preliminary 30% plans. The initial designs are available to view in the documents section of the main website (use this link to access the design directly from here), and feedback may be provided via the survey on the project page (or use this link to access the survey directly from here). In late 2022 the design plans showing 60% completion are scheduled to be done, with the 90% plans done in 2023.
When will construction start?
With construction funding still pending, it’s not yet known when construction might start. However, completing the design work will enable construction to begin more quickly once funding is secured.
