Overview

Northwest Aurora is the cultural heart of the city and East Colfax is Aurora’s original downtown. The Colfax Community Vision and Action Plan a planning process focused on gathering community priorities for the Colfax area and creating an action plan for achieving these goals. As part of this effort, the project is also evaluating different models for a community-led organization that could help fund and work towards these priorities.

Study Area

This project focuses on the East Colfax corridor in Northwest Aurora. This study area includes East Colfax Avenue and the surrounding blocks between Yosemite Street and Peoria Street (yellow dashed outline on the map below).

Community Engagement Summary

Over the last nine months, we have:

• Hosted or attended 22 events with 740+ attendees
• Held 90+ conversations with residents, business owners, property owners, and organizations
• Survey available in 5 languages

From that feedback, these six priority areas emerged:

• Public Safety & Security
• Supporting Small Businesses & Access to Goods and Services
• Community Wellbeing & Stability
• Cleaning & Maintenance
• Advancing Arts, Culture, and a Creative Economy
• Public Space Improvements

What's Happening Now?

We’re drafting a plan based on community input. It will include action steps and tools that help make progress real and sustainable by looking into two possible organizations:

• Downtown Development Authority (DDA) – which can reinvest property and sales tax growth into the area. Learn more about DDAs
• Community Development Corporation (CDC) – a nonprofit that can lead revitalization work. Learn more about CDCs

The next working group meetings will be held virtually on Monday, June 9th from 4:00pm - 5:30pm and Tuesday, June 10th from 11:30am - 1:00pm.
