Housing Strategy Update
Thanks to all who shared their observations and ideas!
The city is working to update the Aurora Housing Strategy that was first created in 2020. The update process started with gathering public input from our community.
The city hosted six community feedback sessions — one for each City Council ward — in July and August. Dates, times and locations of those meetings are available on the right side of this page.
Residents also had another opportunity to participate through a housing strategy digital community engagement forum hosted on this page from Sept. 1 to 15. The forum relied on a questionnaire, which is still available for review on this page. That questionnaire featured the same discussion questions used during the in-person sessions, allowing residents to continue sharing their ideas, experiences and housing priorities online.
We thank all Aurora community members who have participate in this important planning effort. That input will help shape the updated strategy and guide city leaders in the years ahead as they work to ensure that Aurora has diverse housing options that support all residents.
The Aurora Housing Strategy is a key policy and planning document that will be used to inform future city actions. It also helps ensure that the city's federal funding priorities are data-driven, responsive to community needs, and aligned with requirements set by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Aurora is the third largest city in Colorado with more than 418,000 residents, up from 325,000 people in 2010. In 2017, the city faced an estimated shortage of 7,500 units of housing for very low-income households. Current estimates indicate that number has increased to more than 12,000 units in 2026, highlighting the city’s challenges.
Residents are encouraged to review the 2020 Aurora Housing Strategy to better understand the role that it plays in the city's housing work. That document as well as other materials from the community feedback sessions is available under the "Project Resources" tab on this webpage.
The city encourages community members to submit questions about this process below and city staff members will respond as appropriate.
